The 242 Junior Junkanoo Jam : The 2.4.2 Series
0$20.00Overachiever alert: Gwendolyn is officially in Junior Junkanoo—and, of course, her brother Bevan, inventor of most of her problems, is in tow.
As she pastes and bedazzles her costume, she quickly realizes that this cultural celebration comes with a jaw-dropping price tag. She has tried everything to finish her masterpiece. Money—or rather, the lack of it—has her in a jam, and not the sweet, spread-on-toast kind she actually likes, but the sticky, can’t-get-out kind. Talk about a fruitless situation—in the end she wishes it were actually “fruitless.”
Her mother’s recommendation to solve her problem? A hard NO. Scratch that—a NEVER. She’s already taken too much from her Grammy, and even her bestie’s heroic assistance can’t quite fill the gap.
So… is Gwendolyn about to receive a miracle or two? Is the Junkanoo costume completion’s solution entirely man-made?
Either way, when the parade finally begins, the music is supposed to be the familiar clatter of Junkanoo’s cowbells, whistles, goat-skin drums, and lunka that influence dance moves, but standing at the very front of the line, Gwendolyn can’t help but do an involuntary, slightly horrified rendition of what looks like a frantic liturgical performance of another kind of Bahamian music: rake-n-scrape (make that rake and scratch). This situation proves to be a real, jam-packed disaster.
